A property in Sandown was evacuated this morning (Monday) after its outer wall collapsed onto 2 vehicles, prompting a response from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue service.
On-call firefighters from Shanklin were called to Royal Street at around 07:30 this morning.
The crew arrived to find the outer wall of a property had collapsed, damaging 2 vehicles on the driveway.
One local resident described the noise as like a ‘lightning strike’.
The building was evacuated and assessed as firefighters cordoned off the area.
The incident was handed over to the owner and the Isle of Wight Council, before Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service left the scene at around 10:00.
Cordons around the premises remain in place, whilst structural investigations take place.
An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson has said:
“An inspector from the Isle of Wight Council Building Control team visited the site this morning and confirmed that the outer face of the stone wall to a property on Royal Street, Sandown has collapsed.
“As a result, the house has been deemed unsafe for occupation.
“The owners are in contact with their insurers to arrange for the property to be made safe and for necessary repairs to be carried out.’’

Owners must be hopeful their insurance doesn’t look at google streetview. It clearly shows the wall has been bowing out since 2017.
