UPDATED: Coastguard Rescue Teams from The Needles and Ventnor are assisting Police with an on-going incident at Tennyson Down near Freshwater this afternoon (Thursday).
Hampshire Constabulary were alerted to the discovery of clothes near the cliff edge by members of the public earlier on this afternoon, prompting officers to request the assistance of HM Coastguard at just before 14:00.
At around 15:20 further assistance was requested with Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team tasked to the incident, as first reported by Island Echo.
It is thought that Coastguard officers are conducting a full cliff search and rescue operation, however it is currently unknown if any persons have been located.
UPDATE FRIDAY – Following a thorough search of the area, no persons have been located nor any signs of anyone having fallen.
Search teams have now stood down.
The clothes discovered by a member of the public included a worn orange cycling jacket, a beanie hat and a receipt from 2015. Authorities believe the items may just be lost property.
