CLOSELY FOUGHT MATCHES AND FIRST VICTORY FOR 84-YEAR-OLD JOHN IN DIVISION 2

Division 1 of the Isle of Wight Table Tennis league provided 2 high-quality close matches again this week.

First Newport Vics B met Ryde Rivals with most games going to 4 or 5 sets. The Player of the match was Ryde’s Martin Johnstone, but Newport’s Rob Warren took him to 5, only losing in the final set at deuce. Ryde’s Darol Wilson overcame Newport’s Barry Joyce for the first time and was unlucky not to win 2 games. Ryde took the doubles to win the match 6-4.

The other close match was between Ryde Raiders and Wroxall A. Ryde’s Alex Rorke was the player of the match with straight 3-set wins in all his games. Rorke’s teammate Timothy Giles was on top form too, with 2 victories. The match rested on the doubles with Giles and Rorke having no trouble in taking it in 3 sets to win the match 6-4.

Teammate 84-year-old John Penny had some hard matches, with 2 going to 5 sets; 1 culminating in his first victory in Division 2, and the other he lost by the closest of margins.
