Don Hobbs - Shanklin Sharks


Second-placed Shanklin Sharks met third-placed Ryde Royals in the closest match of the week in the Isle of Wight Table Tennis League Division 1.

With Ryde’s 17-year-old Hugh Idle comfortably winning all his matches, Shanklin’s top player Don Hobbs and Para champion Tom Johnson each won 2 with Ryde’s Ricky Lock and Shanklin’s Michael Bulpitt winning 1 each.

The doubles was contested between Lock and Idle and Hobbs and Johnson, and although hotly contested, the Ryde pair won in 3 sets and the match ended in a draw with Shanklin cementing their second place position – although 20 points behind the runaway leaders Ryde A.

Alex Rorke continued his unbeaten record in Ryde A’s trouncing of Havenstreet Hooters 9-1, although Havenstreet’s Darol Wilson had a fine 5-set victory over Ryde’s Roger Nevell.

Division 2

Rookley’s Carl Rye was in fine form in their match against Division 2 leaders Newport Vics C, beating Newport’s Barry Joyce in 3 sets, and Dave Newnham in a thrilling 5-set match, but lost out to Trevor Percival in another nailbiting 5-setter, and the match ended 7-3 to Newport.

Freshwater A are now challenging for second place against Havenstreet Locos after their 10-0 demolition of bottom-placed Newport Vics D. Freshwater’s Lawrence Fo was Man of the Match and won all his matches in 3 straight sets.

In his first season in Isle of Wight Table Tennis, Ryde Regal’s David Ford is improving every week and was player of the match against Ryde Rackets, beating experienced Heather Wykes and Marlene Irving, and winning a 5-set thriller against higher-ranked Ken Watson.

Another player in his first season of playing in the league, 15-year-old Gideon Flack, was player of the match in Newport Vics E’s match against Ryde Rockets, keeping his cool to beat experienced Anna Garrioch in 5 sets, and winning both his other games in a fine performance.
