The driver of a Renault Clio van is being checked over by paramedics after rolling the vehicle onto its roof in Ryde – without hitting any objects or other vehicles.
Emergency services are currently on scene at St John’s Road where the blue, car derived van has come to rest upside down in the middle of a busy junction – outside the local laundrette.
Those first on scene have been left scratching their heads as to how the single vehicle incident occurred at just before 22:00.
Island Echo is told the vehicle was ‘speeding’ down the High Street and, as it turned right into Green Street, it simply rolled over. There has been some suggestion it may have kissed a low level kerb on the inside.
The driver – a young male – has been assisted from the vehicle by firefighters from Ryde and is now in the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
He has escaped any serious injury.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service mobilised 2 appliances from Ryde, but no further action has been needed beyond scene safety with the second appliance now standing down.
St John’s Road has been closed in both directions between Station Street and Prince Street, with access from the High Street blocked. There is no access to the Upper High Street either.
All roads are expected to reopen later tonight once recovery has been completed.
UPDATE SUNDAY – A teenager has been arrested following last night’s crash, Police have confirmed.

I took relations for a trip down memory lane today
whilst they are staying on the island, we drove down
Station Street in Brading this evening and there are
Vehicles parked outside the Council Houses on
the pavement / Double Yellow Lines

What made me laughter this afternoon
I was going to the ferry to collect relatives from
the ferry and when driving past the scene of this
accident, all the glass is still in the road!
(SHOCKING)
I would have thought someone from the Emergency
services would have arranged for the glass to be
picked up.
That is accident waiting too happen.
The services on the island are a complete joke.
IW Council are more concerned booking motorists
who go a few minutes over their ticket time.
I know it’s no mow May, is it also no
sweep May!!
So did you report the glass to Island Riads either by phoning them (24/7 for urgent cases like this) or via their website?
Of course they didn’t, all they do is comment on the island echo several times a day and then bitch when nothing changes.
