Carriageway strengthening work on several sections of Victoria Avenue in Shanklin is to begin later this month, with a prolonged closure of the main road in the middle of the busy Summer season.
The work, which will improve 6 sections of the busy highway, is scheduled to last 10 working shifts starting on Monday 14th July.
Work will include some deeper than usual excavations to address issues that have caused the surface to deteriorate, so the road will need to be closed as through routes for the duration of work.
The work is being spilt into 3 phases to lessen the impact on residents and other road users. The road will also be reopened at weekends if it is safe to do so.
These phases are from west of Florence Road to east of Furze Hill Road, west of Furze Hill Road to west of Westhill Road and west of Westhill Road to east of Windsor Drive.
This phasing means that though the official diversion is from Whiteley Bank, as many other local routes will be available for as long as possible. Information boards will be put out in advance to give motorists further advance notice.
An Island Roads spokesperson has said:
“It is unfortunately not possible to undertake work of this nature without causing some local inconvenience but by announcing the work in advance, residents and businesses can at least plan for any disruption.
