A car has been destroyed by fire in Sandown overnight, with Police now investigating the suspicious incident.
2 fire appliances were mobilised to a car park off Stower Place at around 04:00 this morning (Friday), where a Toyota Aygo X was found to be well alight.
Members of the public had called 999 after hearing at least 2 loud explosions.
Firefighters doused the flames to bring the situation under control but not before the blaze could spread to a nearby fence. The intense heat also melted a wheelie bin.
The vehicle’s devastated owner – who works at St Mary’s Hospital – returned to her vehicle shortly before 06:50 to find the charred remains.
She had heard the explosions in the night but didn’t realise her car was involved.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary are leading the investigation into the fire.
