UPDATED: Police are in attendance at a road traffic collision on the outskirts of Shanklin tonight (Monday), where a car has collided with a tree.
A silver VW Golf has lost a wheel and punctured another in the incident on Church Road between Shanklin and Cowleaze Hill. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 22:30.
Island Echo understands the vehicle was travelling away from Ventnor when it lost control on a left hand bend, narrowly avoiding smashing through a stone wall and dropping into the river below.
Oil has been spilt onto the carriageway as a result of the smash, although off the main road.
No one is believed to have been injured but at least 1 – possibly 2 – arrests has been made.
The road remains open in both directions.
UPDATE @ 23:35 – The vehicle has been recovered and Island Roads operatives are now on scene clearing the oil spillage.
UPDATE TUESDAY – A 46-year-old and a 55-year-old man, both of Shanklin, remain in Police custody this morning having been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.
