Firefighters are tackling a car fire on the Southbound lane of the dual carriageway in Newport this afternoon (Friday).
The incident, which has seen a fire break out within the engine bay of a Ford Focus, has occurred opposite the Wakes Retail Park.
1 retained appliance from Newport is on scene with the single crew using breathing apparatus.
UPDATE @ 15:56 – The fire, which has destroyed the family hatchback, has now been extinguished.
A section of grass at the side of the carriageway has been charred by the blaze.
Firefighters remain on scene damping down the charred remains of the vehicle and the grass verge.
Police have closed 1 lane of the dual carriageway which is resulting in some traffic delays.
The cause is unknown.

I went past this car not long after it started. Must be horrible watching your car go up in flames and there is nothing you can do about. There also seems to be an increase in cars going on fire. Why?
Council likes putting traffic lights up all over Newport to cause gridlock. Cars over heat whilst stuck in the jams.
You know almost all cars have had electric cooling fans since the early 90s, right?
In any case, they just boiled over, not caught on fire. Fires are caused by fuel leaks and electrical faults.
Most cars cut out when not moving
A car should not simply over heat, cooling systems are designed to stop that, a car malfunction or a lack of maintenance could cause a fire amongst other things. Waiting in traffic causing a car to overheat is not the fault of traffic lights.
The only thing that can over heat is more likely to be the driver, due to delays.
If people maintained their cars they wouldn’t over heat so that’s not the cause the cause is poor car maintenance
Perhaps it was one of those irritating cars with a modified ECU giving it the pop bang exhaust on overrun and some incompetant DIY job in the engine bay causing a petrol leak …

Yer basic maintenance! Not – more brand new EV car’s are going up in flames. Car fire can occur for many reasons, usually electrical as in Vauxhall zafiras.
This was someone’s or families car they had saved up and paid for and they are lucky didn’t happen at speed and caused accident. Selfish comments on often to snobbed people who either lease or have huge loan on their car.
The number of idiotic drivers who passed within 3 feet of this flaming time bomb, some with children in their cars, unbelievable!
