An arson investigation has been launched after a campervan was destroyed by fire at Lower Hyde Holiday Park in Shanklin during the early hours of this morning (Tuesday). Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service mobilised 4 appliances to the popular holiday destination at around 04:00, with crews from Shanklin, Sandown, Ventnor and Newport arriving on scene to find a luxury campervan ablaze in the middle of the park. Firefighters used breathing apparatus sets, hose reel jets and main jets to tackle the flames but it was too late to save the vehicle, which has been completely gutted on the inside. It has been confirmed that the fire is thought to have been set deliberately, prompting an arson investigation. It follows some alleged ‘trouble’ at the park at the weekend, involving some of those staying on the touring site.
Cordons have been erected around the burnt-out vehicle with officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary maintaining a scene guard this morning. No other vehicles or pitches have been affected. UPDATE @ 12:44 – Police have confirmed that the fire is being treated as suspicious and enquiries remain ongoing this afternoon.
