A newly elected councillor will be asked to ‘consider his position’ on a crucial County Hall committee after failing to attend vital meetings.
Reform’s Councillor David Maclean has been absent from the first 3 sessions of the children’s services, education and skills committee (CSESC), its Conservative chair, Councillor Paul Brading, told members last week.
Cllr Maclean has attended only 2 out of 6 committee meetings he has been expected to attend since being elected as Lake North’s representative in May, according to the Isle of Wight Council’s website.
His Reform colleague Councillor Caroline Gladwin stepped in for him last Thursday, telling CSESC she would likely be taking over from him because of her interest in the committee.
Cllr Maclean was not present at the 3rd May by-election count or his initiation ceremony at County Hall the following week. This was due to a death in the family. But he has been seen locally, in East Cowes, in the past few days.
Councillor Brading has said:
“I’m conscious Cllr Maclean has not been to our first three meetings. It really does concern me because at our first three meetings we shared a lot of background information around the portfolio.
“Going forward we have some real key decisions to make and I’m just wary that without the knowledge we’ve all picked up from our first three meetings, it may be a problem.

Cllr Brading has emailed Cllr Maclean asking him to consider his position.

Be careful of the language you use. I think you mean their voters look like football hooligans. Anyone living in the ward they represent is a constituent and it is a bit unfair to suggest that everyone living in his ward looks like a football hooligan.
Give the guy a bit of a break. He didn’t attend one due to a death in the family.

but if he hasn’t bothered to turn up to another 3 of 5 of the meetings he was required to be at,.. and therefore doesn’t know all the relevant information, how can he possibly be involved in making decisions that rely on that information…
(unless, of course, he intends to base his decisions on what works best for him,.. which appears to be the usual MO for deform..)

Wasn’t he the one everyone was claiming was AI during the elections because he never showed up to those either? He must be really unlucky, I believe it was a ‘death in the family’ then as well…
The people of Lake VOTED FOR HIM
He is useless, he does not live here, BUT WE VOTED FOR HIM
The people who voted for him are the only ones who can remove him.
Fortunately we get that option next year.
This is inevitable. Who votes for Reform? Elderly people with low academic attainment and young people with low academic attainment.
That defines Lake and most of the wider Bay area.
People in Lake North as a majority don’t have the intelligence and understanding to know they are causing self-harm, and will by default not admit mistakes.
He is entitled to not attend meetings. His voters have evaluated him and his party, judged him as a person and the other candidates and decided this is how they want to be represented. I suppose if he is not attending meetings, he cannot accidentally make any important decisions – so perhaps he is sparing those of us who did not for him.
And if Reform win any IW seat next year – then it is backing that this is the way people want to be governed at a local level.
Or open a can of worms and link democracy to intellegence – But that is a debate for another time.
Lake says it all, not the sharpest tools in the shed.
No doubt he is picking up his almost £16,000 a year basic allowance for doing nothing – more taxpayers money sucked up by the Reform parasites
As it appears he obviously can’t fulfil his duties as a councillor , he should step down
