A high flying businessman who has taken on the lease of The George in Yarmouth has revealed his ambition of turning the West Wight town into the UK’s very own St Tropez.
Howard Spooner, who is reported to be a friend of Royalty, wants to inject some fun into the area and has plans to install a sauna, hot tubs and sunbeds at The George. He has told The Daily Telegraph that he would like to see Yarmouth become the next St Tropez as he believes the Isle of Wight has a lot going for it and is an ‘amazing place to go’.
Speaking from Mauritius this week, Mr Spooner has said:
“When the sun’s out you won’t find anything like it, it’s absolutely stunning. At the moment it’s the best kept secret by retired people.
“There’s a lot of fun to be had there in the sunshine. But there’s not many decent food offers. I hope I can inject a bit of fun and liven it up a bit.”
48-year-old Howard is known for running a string of nightclubs across London and is the owner of The Clapham Grand. He has now signed into a 3-year lease on The George, a 16th Century building that sits beside Wightlink’s ferry terminal and Yarmouth Pier.
Over the years The George has seen its fair share of the rich and famous; in 2015 the hotel was taken over by Benedict Cumberbatch when he got married to Sophie Hunter at nearby Mottistone.
It is expected that the handover will take place on 21st January.
