A burst water main has left hundreds of homes and businesses in the Shanklin area without water this afternoon (Bank Holiday Monday). Properties in the PO36 and PO37 regions have been without a supply for several hours as a result of a main fresh water supply pipe bursting. Island Echo understands the main has failed underneath Newport Road – the arterial road connecting Lake and Apse Heath. Water has been seen gushing down the hill towards Sandown Airport, which means the road is likely to be subject to a closure in the near future. No time scale has been given as to when water supplies will be restored, nor when the burst itself will be fixed. A spokesperson for Southern Water has said:
”We are aware of a burst in PO36 & PO37 Area. Our team is on the way to investigate and make the necessary repairs. “We apologise for any inconvenience caused and we thank you for your patience”.
UPDATE @ 17:03 – Newport Road – the A3056 – has now been closed in both directions, between Apse Heath Roundabout and Morrisons Roundabout. All traffic is having to divert via Shanklin and Whiteley Bank, or Sandown and The Downs.
