One man was taken to hospital and buildings were evacuated in Sandown this morning (Saturday) after a gas cylinder exploded on an industrial estate.
Firefighters from Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor responded to 999 calls at 10:55 this morning after an acetylene gas cylinder exploded at H.J Bennett’s premises on Faulkner Lane, off of Avenue Road, injuring one male.
The unknown man, believed to be a employee, was taken to St Mary’s Hospital by ambulance suffering with burn injuries.
Island Echo understand up to 30 people were evacuated from a number of buildings nearby by the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service as a precaution.
Emergency services have now left the incident, which has left at least one vehicle damaged by the blast.
No neighbouring buildings have been effected by the explosion.
