UPDATED: Bomb Disposal experts are this afternoon (Tuesday) attending what is believed to be an unexploded mortar on Tennyson Down, Freshwater.
The Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team were called from Portsmouth earlier this afternoon by local Police after what is believed to be a 2-inch high explosive mortar was located on the remote downland overlooking Freshwater Bay.
Police were alerted to the find at 11:45 this morning.
Witnesses have reported seeing personnel heading through Newport towards the West Wight on a blue light run.
The team have arrived on scene and are expected to carry out a number of investigations to establish exactly what the object is before a decision is made on how to safely detonate the explosive, should it be required.
UPDATE: Disposal experts successfully and safely detonated the mortar device in-situ before being redeployed to the bomb scare in Ventnor.
