A man in his 20s sustained minor injuries when his car smashed through a wall and into a ravine in Shanklin late last night (Thursday).
Emergency services were called to Church Road, near Big Mead, at 23:24 after a BMW was involved in a single-vehicle collision.
The car is said to have been travelling from Ventnor to Shanklin when the driver lost control, careering straight through a stone wall and dropping a significant distance into a stream.
The crash has wiped out a WightFibre cabinet, resulting in a loss of service in the local area.
Police spoke with the driver, who was checked over by paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
No arrests were made.
The vehicle remains in situ pending specialist recovery.
A Police aware sticker has been placed at the scene to reassure passing motorists.

and some **** drove at speed on the wrong side
of the road towards oncoming traffic.

Must admit that I prefer “Numpty” rather than other expletives which are very common on here, sometimes hidden behind acronyms or abbreviations but more than obvious to most people.

Noone was arrested and there is no suggestion that anyone has yet been charged with anything. There could be all sorts of explnations and no doubt in due course we shall hear what happened. In the meantime, rather than conduct trial by keyboard warrior, perhaps it would be be best to adopt the position “better to say nothing and be thought an fool than condemn now with no evidence and remove all doubt”.
‘No arrests made.’ does this mean the police believe the event to be fault-free and the emergency services and Council (all funded by us) will pick up the bill, which will run into thousands? It would be interesting journalistic exercise to follow up on the hundreds of single vehicle incidents we read about every year in the Echo and report on how many drivers, in the absence of drugs or drink being involved, were charged and fined for – at least -careless driving. Or could it be that no action is taken and we through Council tax and insurance increases are left to pick up the bill?
