Black ice on a country lane on the outskirts of Ryde has caused a single vehicle collision involving a van this morning (Saturday).
Police, paramedics and firefighters are currently on scene at East Ashey Lane, where a white Suzuki Carry has crashed in less than favourable driving conditions.
Island Echo understands the vehicle was travelling towards Ashey Road from Brading when the driver was caught out by black ice on a right hand bend at just before 10:30.
Although the temperature has risen to 4c, ice is still present at the edge of the carriageway which is shaded by hedgerows.
The male casualty has been assisted from the vehicle and is now in the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, which has an ambulance crew, critical care paramedic and an operational commander on scene.
His injuries are thought to be minor.
Fire crews were mobilised from Ryde and Sandown, with the latter already stood down from the incident. Firefighters have stabilised the van and assisted the driver from the vehicle.
East Ashey Lane is currently closed in both directions between Ashey Road and West Lane, but is expected to reopen within the hour once recovery has been completed.

Very dodgy road conditions on minor roads today. Take care everyone
More bad driving on the Iow
It’s funny i was in a very bad motorbike accident back in the 80s police turned up then fucked off car damaged bike smashed up on side of road someone else had to call an ambulance.Had broken bones..but didn’t know at that point, some small cuts went to hospital left in a curtained cubicle on my own collapsed got back up dazed nurse came back in you alright ? i said no i just collapsed from shock just went ohh….seems a lot better now when things happen.
Please don’t use the f word out of context, it doesn’t make any sense.
Isle of Wight must be the capital of single vehicle
collisions.
There have been more single vehicle collisions than
McDonald’s sells burgers
Time to introduce 20mph islandwide, much safer for
everyone.
Roll on devolution
Amazing, yet again you seem to think a 20mph limit would be the perfect cure for all accidents on the Island, broken record or what? Could I suggest that if your unhappy/uneasy driving at more than 19mph then maybe its time to give up your licence?
It would put a stop to accidents happening and
if they did happen, minimal damage and injuries would
take place.
It’s about time IW Council took a leaf out of
Sadiq Khan’s book.
20mph is plenty. It is also a great way for the island
making extra revenue in fines for persons breaking the
speed limit.
Speed isn’t the problem, it’s driving standards. Anyone can still have stupid accidents at a low speeds. If you truly think that an islandwide 20mph limit will cure the problem, then you are absolutely deluded.

Sadiq Khan? You mean the guy who has singlehandedly ruined London? You muppet
He has made it safer for everyone and
less people suffer from Asthma
Don’t be a Numpty all your life
Bless
Shut up. And find some new words, you know-nothing narcissist
Are there no longer any traffic accidents in London now then?
Not due to speeding
20mph is plenty works
This accident was caused by black ice, not loss of control through speed so it is difficult to see how a 20mph limit would help

Says the person who obviously has nothing better to do than drive very slowly and take ages to get anywhere, I bet you are retired! Afraid most of us have places to go and, although a little clichéd, time is money!
I stick to the rules and drive sensibly in icy
conditions, it’s a shame numpties don’t!
20mph speed limit doesn’t stop people speeding they have this in guernsey and all it does it create traffic and frustrated drivers that put their foot down at the first opportunity of no police in sight and that’s on an island much smaller than this one 20mph here would create problems island wide once again you prove you have no clue what your talking about you need a new hobby other than repeating your bulls*#t views on absolutely every post on here #sadlittlelife
It does when they receive heavy fines and
points on their licence.
Majority of island numpties would have 12 points
in under a week.
Points make prizes
Shame no-one thought to put signs up…traffic was having to turn round in the road.
Black ice did not “cause” this. The van driver did.
Seeing how van drivers choose to traverse this island, I don’t think anybody is surprised.
Really? I judged that it had been excess water coming off the field on the left onto the road with a right hand camber which froze overnight and then wasn’t gritted. I turned round on the exact junction with the field where he had presumably started to go into a slide, and even at less than 5mph I can tell you it was treacherous.
Unless, of course, you take the same view as insurance companies do and blame the driver for, um, driving.
Too many vans being driven by numpties is the
problem.
You are spot on.
Was it a secret that the road was icy? No – careful drivers drive according to the weather conditions. If this wasn’t true there would have been dozens of other vehicles crashing on that road at that time.
A person who talks sense, sadly not many on the island.
I could not have said it better myself
