The chair of the Isle of Wight Council faces a challenge from Reform UK, the Green Party and a Conservative at the upcoming local elections.
Voters in Binstead and Fishbourne have a choice of Ramesh Babu (Local Conservatives), Ian William Dore (Independent), Alice Walker (The Green Party) and Terence Wing (Reform UK).
Ahead of the first Isle of Wight-wide County Hall poll since 2021, the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) requested 100-word pitches from candidates either directly, or through their party or group, as well as a photo.
Here’s what they had to say, in no particular order…
Dr Ramesh Babu
I am Dr Ramesh Babu, more commonly known as Dr Babu. I am a breast surgeon, and I have been working for the last 22 years at St Mary’s Hospital. I live in Fishbourne and felt the need to lead and effect a change.
As a local doctor I have spent my work life listening to medical problems and treating challenging medical conditions. I have seen first-hand how health, housing, and social care intersect.
I now want to step forward to serve our community in a new way, bringing compassion and real solutions to the local community at my Binstead and Fishbourne ward as a councillor.
Ian William Dore (council chair and incumbent ward councillor)
Independent, ex forces and local. For five years I’ve delivered practical ward results by showing up, listening, and chasing until it’s done.
Unflinching and consistent commitment, that has produced real action on flooding and drainage, as well as everyday basics residents actually feel.
I work across boundaries, protect local services, and keep pressure on when others move on. I’m rooted here, visible on the patch, and free from party lines.
For local elections, residents need consistency and experience. This isn’t national theatre, it’s about making sure things get done locally, for the ward, for the residents you represent.
Alice Walker
I grew up on the Island, worked in a local restaurant and volunteered with the scouts before going to university.
I understand the challenges of local people and Islanders, especially those of young people and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
My priorities will be improving local education, creating better public transport, protecting our green spaces, and standing up for all Islanders.
Terence Wing
Five years ago, after a career in the military and voluntary sector, I retired to a farm on the Island. I am a firm believer that the Island offers a unique work/life balance and I hope you give me the opportunity to utilise the qualities of loyalty, determination, integrity and commitment I gained throughout my life to help improve the opportunities and quality of life of Binstead and Fishbourne residents.
One of the biggest issues in our ward is the mismanagement of the roads and I will work tirelessly to ensure the impact on residents is more rigorously considered in the future.
