UPDATED: The main road between Bembridge and Yaverland has been closed by Police close to Bembridge Airport this afternoon (Friday) following a serious road traffic collision.
A Ford Transit tipper and a silver Lexus saloon car have collided on a bend, resulting in two people becoming trapped.
Several appliances from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, including appliances from Ryde and Shanklin and a rescue tender from Newport, are in attendance at the scene alongside senior officers.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are working alongside fire crews to extricate the two persons trapped. The extent of their injuries is currently unknown.
The road has been closed at the junction with Commonwood Lane and at the roundabout the Bembridge end.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area, diverting past Whitecliff Holiday Park or via St Helens.
UPDATE @ 17:45 – An ambulance has conveyed the casualties – a 93-year-old male and his 84-year-old female passenger – to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport this evening. They are not thought to have sustained any life-threatening injuries.
Meanwhile the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have stood down their rescue tender, Ryde and Shanklin crews.
The road remains closed whilst recovery of the vehicles is arranged.
UPDATE @ 20:00 – The road has now reopened in both directions.
