Adverse weather being experienced across the Isle of Wight is only set to worsen by Thursday as Storm Ciarán heads for land, with severe gales now set to batter the Island alongside yet more heavy rainfall.
Forecasters at IW Met Service have issued another yellow weather warning – which could easily be upgraded to amber as the week progresses – due to a small but very strong low-pressure system moving in from the West.
It’s said that Storm Ciaran will bring a mixture of heavy rain and potentially some very strong winds on Wednesday evening and throughout Thursday – another overnight battering as the new month gets underway.
Jamie Russell, Chief Forecaster at IW Met Service, says:
“The track of the system is far from certain at the moment with 2 possible outcomes.
“Either the system will run through Southern England bringing severe gales of 60-70mph on its lead edge, but will be accompanied by some very heavy rain, potentially in excess of 60mm in places. Or the system will run through central England bringing stormy winds of 80-90mph in places but less in the way of rainfall, although still with significant rainfall amounts of 30-40mm in some areas”.
It seems either outcome will bring about yet more challenging conditions at a time when the Island is truly saturated and rivers are swollen. Some rivers have been at their highest for 10 years.
It was only last Wednesday that torrential downpours led to significant flooding locally, causing significant damage to homes and businesses – particularly in Ryde and Newport. Rain has continued to fall in the days since, but the weather forecast for this Wednesday and Thursday will bring about more destruction, particularly as trees are in leaf and the ground is soft.
IW Met Service’s yellow weather warning is in force from 21:00 on Wednesday 1st November until 18:00 on Thursday 2nd November.

I agree they should do more but if we all cleared a drain by our own house or anywhere really and leaves falling all the time keep blocking them so we can all help each other by ‘doing our bit’
Unfortunately, this doesn’t happen now. When do you ever see the lorry going around each street lifting the drain covers and the ‘elephants’ trunk going in and sucking up all the debris. NEVER!

the week before last, when I was out @ 6am, (in the dry) there was evidence that every drain down my road had been cleared (clean & wet around the drain, and trails of water leading from one to the next).
I’m no fan of Island Roads,.. but if you’re going to shout NEVER, at least get your facts straight.
Perhaps they should be thanked for not doing it in the ruish hour…(‘cos I’m sure if they did you’d complain about it)

I remember the panic over the amount of potable water there was left on the planet, and how we were to conserve water in the UK because we had of few hot years that cause reservoir levels to fall, and heathland to burn. All that from at least the 1950 – you can get the docs on YT. Rain is, essentially, potable water, all on the hyrdrological cycle, which is normal, and nothing to do with the fearmongering over ‘climate change’. What was the huge storms over the UK in the 1600s caused by – horse and cow farts?
Still at least this shows people don’t come illegally to the UK for our weather.

Yes the truth is hard to take, especially so if having a buggy full in the family and many do now, is the father still around to pay for their upbringing, or is as is oft the norm, the British tax payer funding the contents?
In all honestly I believe most people understand there is a problem with illegal immigration and benefit scroungers, everyone I speak to is more than aware. I just don’t think it needs to be shoved down our throats 24/7, it just makes people more angry about a situation which is completely out of their hands. It does not matter who you vote for, just watch the next labour government do nothing about the benefit system which pays out huge sums of money to people that could work. A friend of mine who is severely disabled manages to hold down a full time job in the NHS, that is the sort of person I look up to, and when you compare that to the scroungers claiming they can’t work because of X, Y or Z, they should just be ashamed!

The climate has always changed for millions of years, and always will…Prep as much as you like, you can’t control the nature of this planet…Us humans don’t deserve it anyway…
You’re correct climate changes for many reasons naturally or catastrophic events.
However the scientists keep changing their minds what will happen. I can remember reading the south of England will be a desert by 2030, looking to be more likely to be a swamp!
As for preparation, perhaps we shouldn’t allow land to be used for housing but for growing food instead?

Just a thought outside the box but before all the keyboard warriors start moaning about the drains, drains empty out to rivers and the sea and we are experiencing very high tides on top of extreme rainfall. Now if there’s no clear outfalls due to water levels in rivers and the sea water will back up and find its way out in the wrong places and not go down the drains, unfortunately due to the extreme rain and most land/property owners not maintaining their vegetation/autumn leaves they get washed out and then block the grates on the drains. Now if most of the keyboard warriors just spent 30 seconds to push the leaves away the odd drain it would make a difference to many, what happened to common sense and helping not moaning?
