UPDATED: Firefighters spent over two hours at the scene of a fire at The Foyer youth housing unit in Ryde during the early hours of this morning (Thursday).
Three appliances from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene on George Street at 02:00 following reports of a fire in the basement of the building, owned by Spectrum Housing.
An aerial platform appliance was also called to the scene as a precaution, however was not required. The road was closed by Police for a short time.
Firefighters from Ryde and Newport successfully tackled the blaze using breathing apparatus and a hose reel before leaving the scene at 04:30.
All residents were evacuated from the property. It is understood there have been no injuries.
UPDATE @ 16:43 – A candle is understood to have been the cause of the early morning alert.
