UPDATED WITH VIDEO: Police have closed Arthur’s Hill in Shanklin this morning (Saturday) following what is understood to be a serious road traffic incident.
At least 6 Police units have responded to the scene between Avenue Road and Hope Road, which has been cordoned off.
Two ambulances are also reported to be in attendance.
UPDATE @ 11:35 – The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has landed near to the scene off Sandown Road indicating the seriousness of the ongoing situation.
One vehicle – a grey Suzuki – has come to rest against the pavement on Arthur’s Hill. No other cars appear to have been involved.
Island Echo understands the casaulty may have suffered a medical episode at the wheel. The vehicle was travelling towards Shanklin from Lake.
UPDATE @ 11:54 – One casaulty has been rushed to St Mary’s Hospital by land ambulance accompanied by doctors and paramedics from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
The air ambulance has taken off from Lake to land at the St Mary’s helipad to reunite with the crew.
Motorists are continuing to be diverted via Avenue Road and Wilton Park Road.
UPDATE @ 12:05 – Arthur’s Hill has reopened in both directions this afternoon. The vehicle at the center of the incident has been removed by Police.
UPDATE @ 13:20 – The casualty, who has been admitted to St Mary’s Hospital, is understood to be an elderly male. A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has confirmed the man suffered a medical episode at the wheel of his car.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has departed the helipad in Newport with a full crew, however the patient has remained at the Island hospital.
