alexandralanefireUPDATED: Police are this morning (Thursday) investigating the possibility of an arson attack on three vehicles in Newport.

Fire crews were called to Drill Hall Road in the center of the town at just gone 03:30 this morning following reports of a vehicle alight. Just ten minutes later, after quickly and successfully extinguishing the initial car fire, crews were redeployed to nearby Alexanadra Lane where a further two vehicles were reported to be on fire.

A Citroen C3, a Ford Focus and a Hyundai Santa Fe have all been severely damaged.

Firefighters spent 30 minutes tackling the secondary fire, leaving the scene just before 04:30.

Today, scenes of crime investigators are gathering evidence from the scenes of both call outs to determine any suspicious circumstances. Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed they are exploring the possibility that this was an arson attack.

UPDATE @ 14:18 – A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary have this afternoon said:

“We are working with Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service to determine the cause of the fires but believe they were started deliberately.

“We are following several lines of enquiry but would like to hear from any members of the public who can help our investigation.

“If you were in the area at the time and saw or heard anything unusual at all please contact police.”

newportcarfires1This latest incident comes just 4 months after a trail of destruction was left in the same area back in July when four cars were set alight, destroying a range of vehicles and leaving holiday makers stranded. Three of the vehicles were targeted in Alexandra Lane.
