UPDATED: Armed Police have surrounded Fellowship House in Ryde this evening (Wednesday), where a man ‘armed with a knife’ has taken up position on the roof of the building.
Green Street has been cordoned off as officers deal with the incident.
The building’s fire alarm system has been activated and residents have evacuated.
There is not thought to be any risk to the wider public.
UPDATE @ 19:37 – The incident has been brought to a safe conclusion and Green Street has reopened in both directions.
It is thought 1 man has been detained.
Reports suggest the individual involved had been laying in the middle of the road prior to taking to the roof.
UPDATE THURSDAY – Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that a 27-year-old man from Ryde remains in Police custody today after being arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and possession of cannabis.
Although the man did not have a knife on him during the incident, he was carrying another bladed article – a razor.
