Temperatures of up to 37c are expected across the Isle of Wight on Monday and Tuesday, sparking significant health concerns and the issuing of an amber weather warning.
The mercury will rise to almost unprecedented levels across some parts of the Island early next week, mostly affecting central and northern parts – although it will still feel very hot elsewhere. This could result in melting tarmac and health implications for people of all ages, as well as animals.
IW Met Service says that the Island will see a short but intense spell of extremely hot weather as gentle southeasterly breezes push up extremely hot, dry air from the near continent. The latest data suggests that temperatures may reach 35c-37c on Monday.
Tuesday looks like a hot day once again, however, increasing cloud amounts and a change of wind direction to a cooler westerly looks likely at some point during the day. The timing of this change will make all the difference; if it happens early in the day temperatures will reach a maximum of around 29c, but if it happens later on temperatures will be on par with Monday.
Islanders and visitors alike are being warned about the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke – both of which are real and significant risks.
On the roads, motorists may well come across melting tarmac which may lead to driving and cycling hazards.
Those with animals are being advised to walk pets before 09:00 or after 20:00, as well as thinking about animals that are kept outside such as rabbits.
Chief Forecaster Jamie Russell says:
“It absolutely must be noted that even though these temperatures are not as high as what some European contries experience during the summer months, here in the UK and especially on the Isle of Wight we are not used to temperatures at this level.
“Normal summer daytime temperatures range between 19°C and 23°C, meaning we are used to a maritime temperature climate without the huge variations in temperature that our european counterparts often experience”.
The warning is in force from 10:00-19:00 on Monday and 10:00-15:00 on Tuesday.
Elsewhere in the country, the Met Office has issued its first-ever red warning for heat, with 40c+ expected.

Dont any one moan, it will be the depths of winter soon and our heating will be costing us more per day than we can earn!

The air temperature will be off the scale and the roads and pavements will be so hot, paws could get burnt!
Dogs cannot regulate their body temperature, subsequently they over heat very quickly. Keep them indoors with plenty of fresh, clean water. If they are struggling, get some wet tea towels, towels and place them on your dogs body to cool them off.
Sunshine I totally agree, let’s hope the idiots don’t walk their dogs as they have been this week?
I always feel sorry for the Dogs whose owners either Jog or ride a bike

The last eight years have been the hottest years ever recorded yet so many still cling to the oil companies misinformation campaign that global warming is a myth. It is so sad that so many ignore scientists and believe the word of the worlds oligarchs.
