UPDATED: The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is attending to an unconscious male following a road traffic collision in Luccombe, Shanklin this afternoon (Monday).
Police have closed the main Shanklin to Ventnor road as paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and helimed crews work on the casualty. CPR is being carried out.
It is thought the male driver has suffered a medical episode at the wheel of his Skoda Yeti before crashing into a sign post.
Emergency crews were called to the scene at the junction of Priory Road at around 15:15.
The yellow air ambulance has in the last 10 minutes landed on Big Mead rec.p having been requested to attend the incident by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service. (IOWAS).
A police cordon is in place and members of the public are being kept a safe distance.
UPDATE @ 16:30 – The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has taken off from Big Mead recreation park this afternoon, without conveying a patient.
IOWAS’s rapid response 4×4 vehicle and ambulance have also departed from the scene, without blue lights.
The road remains closed and is anticipated to remain closed throughout rush hour. A cordon is still in place.
UPDATE TUESDAY – Sadly, despite the best efforts of emergency crews, a 58-year-old man was yesterday pronounced dead at the scene having suffered a heart attack at the wheel.
