Gusts of up to 70mph and heavy outbreaks of rain are expected across the Isle of Wight tomorrow (Thursday). A yellow weather warning has been issued by IW Met Service, coming into force at 09:00 and continuing through until 21:00 tomorrow night. Forecasters say that a spell of very strong southwesterly winds will affect the Island through Thursday daytime and into the evening. Localised gusts of up to 70mph are possible in exposed parts of the South Wight and West Wight. Gusts of up to 60mph are possible elsewhere. Heavy spells of rain will be an additional hazard in combination with the wind, however, the rain itself is likely to be below the normal warning threshold. Islanders should be aware of the risks of falling tree debris and risk of damage to outdoor furniture. Surface water and spray are expected on the Island’s roads and at the coast, very large waves will be seen around Southern and Western parts with a risk of sudden surges. Delays or cancellations to cross-Solent travel is possible. The warning comes just days before the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, but the weather is set to improve – particularly on Saturday.
