Motorists heading in and out of Ryde will face 6 months of travel disruption from today (Monday) as a major scheme to improve Smallbrook Roundabout gets underway.
The notorious, off-centre mini-roundabout will be transformed between now and April with approaches widened and realigned, traffic islands installed and the centre of the roundabout repositioned. The speed limit is also going to be reduced to 30mph.
Temporary 3-way traffic lights will be installed this morning and one-way restrictions on both Smallbrook Lane and Carters Road will come into force, leading to delays and diversions.
Smallbrook Lane will be open for traffic heading towards Westridge only, meaning all westbound traffic will be diverted via St John’s Road. This is expected to cause tailbacks through the St John’s area, especially at peak times.
Work is scheduled to take place on Great Preston Road also, which according to traffic notices will be closed in both directions for a period of 6 weeks until 12th November, as well as a one-way system in place on the busy diversion route for utility works.
Around 4 weeks of tree cutting works will now take place before utility companies are drafted in to move service pipes and electricity cables. Eventually, work will begin on the reconstruction of the road layout.

SEE what is going on, this is NOTHING to do with making a round about a lttile safer. This is ALL about Penny Feather having services installed and roads altered to create millions for developers.
The council ‘use’ the reason of safety to prevent even more howls of protest of people rightly not wanting green fields destroyed to house people who otherwise would not even be on the Island.

Watch, learn and remember for the next time you are ‘fed’ a plausible excuse for disruption under the guise of public safety or intrests, when in reality that is the sprat to catch a mackerel to keep protests to the lowest level feasible.

I don’t understand. You bang on about how the roads can’t take the new estates. But then moan when, in your own words, they change a junction to allow it to cope? Your argument makes no sense.
I’m not banging on… just stating a fact, shouldn’t be more houses, so therefore this work wouldn’t be needed and the money would be spent where the roads are already atrocious. It’s a roundabout not a complete stretch of badly kept up road.
So, to Newport via Ventnor then.

The real answer is less cars. Free public transport will mean a lot less using these roads. Extend the railway back to newport, build it on one of the roads if needs be. How to pay for it? Lets first stop sending our tax money abroad.
The only thing free is your legs. So the real answer is to look after them, exercise them, and use them as much as possible for as many years as you can. You can be sure that under a government focused on money and growth, all other solutions will increase in price, and involve waiting even longer.
And if you have a leg problem go straight to A&E because with the Island’s population out of control you will have great difficulty finding a Doctor.
Six months to slightly improve a junction so island roads can take as long as they want to do a job as usual, no doubt 9-3 as well, do it overnight and give them a time limit of 8 wks or they lose money, same old island nonsense
The site there is haunted. I know of two people who have seen just a ‘hand’ appearing in that area.
One a close friend. Another guy I knew saw the hand appear in front of him, so he said and I never mentioned the incident from years ago to him.
Don’t know why, but they used to bury criminals at cross roads and witches I think, so, lets hope that whatever it is haunts the greedy developers who are the real cause of the long closure, not a few square yards of earth for lights to be installed as the gulible believe.
Yet we know that the developers will live miles away and live to the max on the destruction they inflict on us and wildlife
What is needed there is a CCTV system which we, the CT payers, can control and then watch to see exactly how much work is being done at any time, see who has hands in pockets and who is on their mobile, not to mention time actually spent on site. Sort of big brother if you like.
