A Ryde man has been jailed by the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court after a bout of thefts to the sum of nearly £3,000.
Stephen Durkin, 44, of Surrey Street, was brought before the court from the cells this morning (Tuesday) for sentencing regarding 12 counts of theft from a shop.
As previously reported by Island Echo, the prolific offender began his latest string of thefts in September 2025, spanning through until the beginning of this year, which began with a mere £10 from Tesco, over time becoming £1334.12 worth of goods nicked from the supermarket giant.
The prosecutor, Varon Chuni, told the Court how Durkin had stolen a total of £2997.89 worth of goods from various shops, including £1344.12 from Tesco, £370 from B&Q, £150.50 from Morrisions, £115 from JD Sports, £155 from the Little Carnaby Shop and finally £756 from Sports Direct.
Defending, Michael McGoldrick told the court that Durkin is trying to get himself healthy and is actively engaging in rehabilitation programmes with very positive references.
Durkin was given a 6-month custodial sentence, with a 6-month Drug Rehabilitation Requirement (DRR).
Magistrates also ordered Durkin to pay 20% of the total of stolen goods, namely £587.
