2 sections of busy footway in Ryde are scheduled to be resurfaced by Island Roads starting this month, bringing about 35 days of travel disruption.
Work to improve a 685-metre section of pavement at Marlborough Road will start next week while a 565-metre section of the footway at Binstead Road will begin later this month when the Southern Water scheme in nearby Queen’s Road is completed.
Marlborough Road work is expected to last 35 days and Binstead 25 days.
The work at Marlborough Road will resurface the footway between Appley Road and Salisbury Road while at Binstead Road, the stretch between Gwydyr Close and Ringwood Road will be improved.
In both cases, temporary traffic lights will be installed to ensure work can progress as swiftly and safely as possible. These signals will be manually controlled during peak hours and removed each night whenever possible.
An Island Roads spokesman said:
“We are undertaking these works outside of the summer months when traffic flows are lighter and we will be manually operating the traffic lights in the morning and evening rush hours to keep traffic moving as best we can.
“But as these are busy roads there may be some delays while we carry out these footway improvements so we would urge people to leave additional time for their journeys or use other routes if possible.”

If you Stopped “idiots” parking on Pavements, they would last much longer.
Whilst at it place Double yellow lines along Great Preston Road
and erect NO PARKING ON PAVEMENT SIGNS
No one has ever parked on that stretch of pavement it’s just old and needs replacing. But since a couple of wooden pillars got knocked down around 2 years ago residents seem to think the field is now a parking space.
Bet it lasts alot longer than 35 days as all the tree roots would of caused havoc to the foundation.
Totally agree with you about great Preston Rd though. The van on the corner is a pain in the ass
Vans should pay to park in designated car parks, or be
Left in Company Yards.
Totally agree there should be more done by police and traffic wardens for parking on sodden grass verges, pavements where pedestrians are supposed to be safe etc ,
Erm, its illegal to park on curbs unless its signposted that uou can. Take a picture of the cars with a number plate and send it to the council. Do it everyday and they can a new fine for every day. They’ll get the point.
IW Council are useless and clueless with Parking rules.
Regent Street Shanklin there are more vehicles parked on pavements or in
Loading bays than along the street.
The folk parking on the field opposite to the picture are d#*#s. Just because someone smashed down the wooden pillars 2 years ago (and the council or whoever owns the land didn’t replace it properly) and left a gap doesn’t mean that’s their parking spot. Jellicoe Road is crap for parking but doesn’t mean you can park on a field where kids play.
P.S
Definitely agree with you about great Preston Rd. The van parked on the corner is a pain in the ***
jason the worst culprit is I.O.W council and Ringway island roads
When the hell will they give it a rest? There’s always someone digging up something around Marlborough Road or Great Preston Road. And these bloody housing estates will be next.
They are paid too much money for sitting on their backsides in trucks.
Bloody housing estates? I’m sensing bias. We can’t all own a home up a private road and pretend our fecal matter doesn’t stink. The biggest problem with this damned island is the lack of development. Its so under developed that its repair after repair rather than proper updates every decade or so. What happens when a bunch of grave shy tories are running the show. You’re supposed to build the world of tomorrow not repair the world of 1978.
I believe Wightfibre dug up all the pavements not long ago on Marlborough Road to lay its new cable. And then soon after Gas were there for weeks doing what they do. Now it’s our favourite Island company’s turn. It really is painful.
Island Roads constantly cause massive delays throughout the Island. Months rebuilding a wall in Queens road, still in place after they bust the sewer. Now several weeks on pavements. About time they gave motorists a break.
Having driven past the Queens road “works” on many occasions since the sewer fiasco started i have not actually seen anyone working there.
That’s because the Numpties are parked along the Seafront sitting in their MOTORS
Eating, texting and reading papers.
Their work output in a week is shocking
Too think what they are being paid.
All tax payers money going to waste.
Let’s just hope it’s done properly. You couldn’t honestly say it doesn’t need doing. This island is neglected in the extreme. What happens when the councilors are all but guarenteed their seats and the only people they have to impress are the grave shy tories at the bowls club. Notice how all the bowls clubs are well kept.
Wight fibre will follow to dig it all up and ruin it.
They did in my road, we had, at long last beautiful smooth and level pavement, after wightfibre it’s now a mess and uneven again.
Ok. So what about the rest of Rydes bloody awful pavements?
Can’t they find some roads to resurface or some of the many potholes to fill which would be more sensible !!!
Instead of resurfacing pavements why don’t they finish the roads? There are sdome shocking road surfaces in Ventnor.
Excuse me, but when are they going to finish resurfacing the roads in Ryde / Plenty of roads that are full of pot holes, many look like crazy paving.. where they have ‘spooned’ in bits of tarmac over the years.. thought the original contract was to resurface ALL the roads on this Island ??
Island Roads could not fill a pothole in 7 years.
They are the Joke Company on the Island
Peter Pan I like deep pan pizza
Island Roads should change their name to Island Pavements and Minor Backstreets.
