Firefighters from Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor and Newport were mobilised to reports of a kitchen blaze at a hotel in Ventnor overnight. The fire in an outbuilding to the rear of The Royal Hotel, which was caused by a cooker left unattended, was found to be out on arrival. As a result, crews from Sandown, Ryde and Newport were stood down en-route. Retained crews from Shanklin and Ventnor were required to use ventilation fans to clear a large amount of smoke from the flat. 2 casualties – a man in his 60s and a woman in her 50s – were both treated by paramedics at the scene.were given oxygen before they were passed into the care of paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service. Firefighters isolated the cooker and fitted smoke alarms before returning to station at around 01:00.
