3 people have been arrested and questioned by Police following a serious assault in Newport town centre on Christmas Eve, which left 2 people with head injuries. Shortly before 22:00 on 24th December, Police and paramedics were called to Newport Bus Station, off South Street, to reports of an altercation taking place between a group of men, as previously reported by Island Echo. 2 men in their 20s were taken to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment; 1 had sustained injuries to his head, face and hands and the other had sustained injuries to his ear. It’s understood the assault took place on the pavement outside the main ticket office, beside a double decker bus. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has now confirmed that a 23-year-old man from Cowes, a 23-year-old man from Ventnor and a 22-year-old man from Freshwater were all arrested on suspicion of Section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent. All 3 have since been released from custody on conditional bail while enquiries into the incident continue. The 2 victims have since been discharged from hospital.
