2 men from Enfield in London have been arrested and their van seized by Police following reports of a number of oil thefts from establishments across the Isle of Wight last week.
As previously reported by Island Echo, 2 people wearing hi-vis vests with the words ‘oil collection’ were spotted acting suspiciously across the Island and were even caught entering closed premises without permission.
A number of pubs and takeaways were visited over a 2-day period including The Yarbridge, Chequers Inn, the Hare & Hounds and The Sun Inn at Calbourne, to name a few.
Hampshire Constabulary was alerted to the situation and officers began their investigations, treating the connected incidents as theft.
It was late on Friday afternoon that Police moved in on a white van at Waitrose car park in East Cowes and detained 2 males.
It has now been confirmed to Island Echo that a 44-year-old man and a 19-year-old man, both from Enfield, were arrested and questioned on suspicion of theft. A VW Crafter van containing a number of oil drums was also seized.
The duo have, however, since been bailed until 28th January. Enquiries into the circumstances of last week’s incidents are continuing.
It’s understood that another van – a Peugeot Boxer- was also sighted in suspicious circumstances on Friday. It was last seen in the car park of Tesco Express in Wootton.

There have been a few second generation islanders who have bought misery to their family’s & others over the years & the police pick them up quite quickly. But more & more of the mainlands low life are heading this way nowadays & they are not wanted. This would have been Big news here years ago & now it’s becoming the norm. We are losing our safe & tranquil Island to disrespectful scum. People bang on about a fixed link!! This is an Island, so understand it’s geography or go back & put up with the crime & people you’d hope to escape from. As a fixed link would encourage more of this scum over here.
Enfield is a large town in north London, England, within the ceremonial county of Greater London and the historic county of Middlesex. Long way to come for oil!
