Cowes RNLI lifeboat was tasked to assist a 34ft yacht which was taking on water after hitting a rock in the Western Solent between Gurnard and Thorness yesterday afternoon (Saturday).
The 5 crew members attempted to return to their home port of Hamble, but it was soon apparent that the hull was too seriously damaged to proceed on their own and they called the Coastguard for help at just before 18:40.
On joining the yacht, the lifeboat crew quickly shipped their salvage pump on board to bring the water level down and began towing the vessel to Hamble Point Marina.
Upon arrival, about half an hour later – and still requiring use of the pump – the boats were met by Hamble Harbour Master and a Coastguard rescue team and the yacht was swiftly lifted out of the water.
After welcome refreshment at Hamble, the lifeboat returned to Cowes at 21.30.
