17-YEAR-OLD IDLE BREAKS LAWSON’S UNBEATEN RECORD

League leaders Ryde A took on Ryde Royals in Division 1 of the Isle of Wight Table Tennis League last week, with the match of the night being between Scott Lawson and 17-year-old Hugh Idle.

In an incredible match of high quality, Lawson took the first set, with Idle taking the second, then Lawson won the third with ease 11-2 and it looked all over for the youngster. However, Idle battled back with the fourth set going to deuce, with Idle taking the deciding point. The fifth set was a nail biter which culminated in Idle winning 11-7 and gaining a notable victory, ending Lawson’s unbeaten record. The match ended 8-2 to Ryde, as they increased their lead at the top of the table.

Newport Vics B and Havenstreet Sleepers had a close match, with Newport missing their top player, Anna Joyce. That said, sub Trevor Percival played up from Division 2 and performed well to gained a win against Havenstreet’s Dave Rendle. Brothers Sean and Michael Joyce won 2 and 1 respectively, whilst player of the match Havenstreet’s Ollie Staniforth continued his fine form, winning all 3 of his singles, and the doubles with partner Dave Rendle against the Joyce brothers. The match finished 6-4 to Havenstreet.

Division 2

Ryde Rascals gained an impressive win against Shanklin B, considered contenders for the Second Division title at the start of the season.

Ryde’s Peter Clarke and John Featherstone won all their matches, but teammate Alan Hopkins was unlucky after battling out 2 5-setters, to come away with nothing.

Shanklin’s Tom Waddell and Alan Dennis won the doubles easily against Clarke and Featherstone, with the match ending 6-4 to Ryde.

At the halfway point of the league, Newport Vics C lead the table by 13 points over Havenstreet Locos, with Freshwater lying third with a game in hand, and contenders for second place.

Division 3

There were 3 10-0 thrashings in Division 3 this week, with the most notable St Lawrence Lizards drubbing of experienced Ryde Rockets, which kept St Lawrence in second place at the halfway point of the season, six points behind Ryde Revellers, and with a game in hand.
