12 AIRLIFTED TO CLIFF TOPS AT BLACKGANG

coastguardsunsetchaleUPDATED: 4 adults and 8 children have been airlifted to the cliff tops at Blackgang tonight (Sunday) after finding themselves unable to make head way up the cliff to safety.

Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team, The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team and Coastguard Rescue 104 helicopter from Lee-on-Solent were all deployed to the Blackgang Chine area of the South Wight following a 999 call from the family party of 12 to HM Coastguard reporting that they were in no immediate danger, but unable to return to the top of the cliff.

coastguardchaleAfter exploring all options, Coastguard officers decided to airlift the group from the beach as the safest and quickest method of resolving the situation. The family from the West Midlands have now been landed safely at Chale Recreation Ground on Military Road alongside Coastguard Rescue officers who rendezvoused with them on the beach.

Thankfully, neither the adults nor the children have required medical attention.

 

oldblackgangroadcarparkUPDATE @ 23:00 – The group are understood to have set off for Blackgang Beach from Old Blackgang Road car park, Niton at around 19:00 before realising they required assistance at around 20:20.

The area is a large landslip with narrow, uneven paths.

All rescue teams have been stood down and the incident has been brought to a close.
