Freshwater’s The Vine Inn has been slapped with a 1-star food hygiene rating, with inspectors finding inadequate cleaning and contamination risks. The Isle of Wight Council’s Environmental Health team visited the School Green Road pub on 26th April, finding a number of substandard conditions which have thrown the establishment into a ‘Major Improvement Necessary’ rating. During the visit, inspectors discovered that prepped salad items were being stored next to a sink full of dirty water, with staff also scrapping leftovers into a bin immediately adjacent to the area. They also found that the sink was being used to wash both dirty utensils and equipment, as well as washing raw vegetables. The dishwasher was not in use, meaning the single sink was also being used to wash pots. The small raw meat preparation work surface was being used to store herbs, spices and teabags, whilst an outbuilding where dry foods are stored was found to be in a ‘very poor’ state of cleanliness. Freezers in the area were dirty and contained excess ice. Inspectors also noted that the food temperature probe was not being sanitised before/after each measurement and that there was inadequate disinfection of equipment between being used for raw and ready-to-eat food. A container with 2 different types of cheddar was labelled as ‘sliced 24th April, use by 17th May’ – despite the manufacturer stating it should be used within 5 days of opening. Bacon that had been decanted into a container should have been used within 3 days, according to the manufacturer, but was labelled as being opened on 24th April and ‘use by’ 9th May. According to the official inspector’s report, the paperwork was also not up to scratch. Whilst there were some daily monitoring records, there were no documented procedures to demonstrate that staff had considered each step of the food operation. It was also found there was no comprehensive system regarding the shelf life of high-risk foods, with such foods given long shelf lives in excess of the recommended 2-3 days. Inspectors concluded that staff needed refresher training in food hygiene. Disgraceful place, I only went in there the once under the new owners, full of the dreadful usual crowd of daily pub-dwellers who use it as the halfway stop between the con~club and the social~club.
Freshwater alcoholic establishments needs a real kick up the behind, clean up your act, get rid of the clinger~ons and introduce some new customers.
They would make more money and the pubs and clubs would be a nicer place for people to go.
Nobody wants to see overweight drunken men and women stood outside smoking and swearing in the middle of the day.
And so says the person who drinks half a pint of bitter once every two months. They’re hardly likely to stay in business with people like you as their customers.
John is only allowed to drink half a pint of bitter once every two months because he is already full to the brim with bitterness and would drown in his own venom if he exceeded that amount.
Used to be a good pub when mac had it,now it is only open half the week, lazy “ landlord” syndrome applies now,the person who has it now hasnt got a clue how to run a pub,too busy playing golf!
Aahh, the good old days. I remember Mac. Brilliant landlord. Excellent pub back then.
The current landlord and lady are so much friendlier and much more helpful than the previous landlord he was just rude !
We have eaten many times here and have enjoyed our meals everytime ! X
Another Island Filth Hole.
Close it down? I wouldn’t eat there if you paid me, surprised no one has had food poisoning?
I’m sure the clientele of benefit scrounging pub dwellers won’t mind the rating, still cleaner than their own kitchens!
Modern world, no one cares about reputation. As long as you cuts costs more than the loss in trade you’re winning. Always more holidaymakers to take advantage of.
I disagree with nasty comments! The vine is a great pub with lovely landlords. I love the roasts absolutely delicious and other food is tasty. Shame about rating but I’m sure they will take that on board
How VERY disappointing Sammy and Craig.I have to say we’ve enjoyed many a Sunday lunch in your pub but makes me feel really sick that you sold us food, food that could’ve made us poorly knowing the filthy condition of your kitchen!! All the times we’ve been asked “is everything alright”knowing it possibly wasn,t. Shame on the pair of you!!!
Disagree with this comment, you probably replied with when asked if everything was okay “That was the best food I’ve ever eaten, I’ll definitely be back” hence a few Sunday dinners. You can’t shun the owners now that it has been made an official thing. They’re lovely people and work hard, the vine is always a busy pub and you clearly haven’t read into it. Doesn’t even once state ‘filthy conditions’ there’s some paperwork that isn’t up to scratch and the dishwasher wasn’t on minus a few others… I think you need to calm down ‘Mrs Grumpy’ I’m sure your sink is in a worse state…
Shocked never had a bad meal there, these health inspectors are idiots excess ice in freezer are they thick
Well the ice is by the sounds of it!
Disgusting filth hole, avoid like the plague.. should be shut down until it improves its rating .
The land lady would not serve me she was texting and said it was her day off . saying the girl who serves is dishing dinner out and will be more than ten minutes. It isn’t good enough ….laziness is at the Vine inn
