chandruThe Isle of Wight Zoo is tonight (Monday) mourning the loss of one of it’s 5 remaining Indian tigers.

Chandru arrived in Sandown 15 years ago from a circus collection and spent his years beside his neighbour and companion, Lola, who arrived at the zoo just a year beforehand.

The adaptable tiger, who is believed to have been brought up around lions, had been diagnosed with kidney failure and was not eating. The beautiful animal passed away this evening (6th April).

zoologoA spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Zoo has tonight said:

“He leaves behind his adoring companion, Lola and a number of human friends who will miss him and his gentlemanly disposition greatly”.

Despite his large physique, Chandru is said to have had a mild nature and preferred to steer himself away from any tiger disputes.

The Zoo at Yaverland has suffered a number of losses in recent years including Diamond, Charlie Brown and Chiquita.
