The Westridge Golf Club Championships were held over the weekend (12th-13th July) during the UK’s third heatwave of the year, with 42 Members competing for both Scratch and Handicap honours.
William (Billy) Humphries made an impressive start on Saturday, carding a 71 gross and an exceptional net score of 56, putting him at the top of both leaderboards. Martyn Phillips followed closely in the Scratch competition with 72, while Kim Meguyer posted a 74, leaving reigning champion Zane Cohen in fourth place overnight.
In the Handicap standings, Jan Little trailed Billy by just one shot on 57, with Jacky Cook on 60 and Lorraine Swallow taking third on countback with 62.
Despite a promising start, Billy was unable to maintain his lead in the Scratch competition on day two. A challenging final three holes saw him finish fourth on 151. It was Zane Cohen who rose to the occasion, carding a 70 in the second-to-last group to secure the Club Championship with a total of 145. Kim Meguyer claimed second place on countback from Martyn Phillips, both finishing on 151.
Billy Humphries did, however, hold firm to win the Handicap title with a total of 121, fending off Jan Little on 123. Pete Holton climbed from seventh place to take third with 126.
