Emergency services were called to the scene at the view point car parks on Brading Downs Road/Bullys Hill at around 21:15 when what appears to be 2 Peugeots and a MG were involved in a horrific crash.
3 fire engines, 2 ambulances and a variety of on-call officers were mobilised to the incident, as reported by Island Echo.
Tragically, the driver of the MG ZR – a young male in his late teens or early 20s – was pronounced dead at the scene. Sources say another casualty is in a ‘critical’ condition in hospital.
Collision Investigators from the mainland have spent the night piecing together the events that led to the fatal smash, however the road has since re-opened following recovery of the vehicles.
UPDATE @ 08:55 – Hampshire Constabulary have this morning confirmed that a 20-year-old man from Bembridge has died. The young man’s family have been informed and are being supported by officers at this difficult time.
The driver of the blue Peugeot 207, a 19-year-old man from Binstead, was taken to St Mary’s Hospital with injuries however he has since been discharged. Police have now commented on the Peugeot 306 pictured at the scene.
Investigations into the exact circumstances of the collision are ongoing today and officers would like to hear from anyone who saw what happened or who saw either vehicle prior to the incident.
