A drug driver who was stopped by Police after they received a tip-off he was driving under the influence of cannabis, has been handed a 12-month driving ban.
Wasan Smith, 43, of School Street in Ryde, admitted a single count of drug driving when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (Friday).
Prosecuting, Nola Bond, told the court that on the 27th May, on patrol Police officers were alerted to a VW Polo being driven by someone who was under the influence of cannabis in Binstead.
Having located the vehicle, Police pulled the driver over on Binstead Road and conducted a roadside drugs wipe, in which a positive result for THC was returned.
Defending Smith, Tom Cooke told the court that his client had consumed cannabis before driving, adding that this conviction was going to rid him of his previous good character.
Magistrates handed Smith a 12-month driving ban and fined him £120. He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £48 surcharge fee.

He knew he had smoked it, so, don’t get in the car!
These numpties will never learn right from wrong.
Whilst I agree that drink and drug drivers should lose their licences, too many will take the chance and drive while disqualified. Crush the car – saves a huge amount of time and work trying to collect fines, will remove a lot of old bangers from the roads and will for sure have a massive deterent effect.
Well said Marcus. Finally someone with common sense and a brain. Heavy fine, if they cannot afford to pay it, send in the bailiff’s. Also, crush the car. No doubt this will work, maybe not to all of these selfish, brain dead morons, but a good deal of them.
If he was that worried about his previous good character, he shouldn’t have done it.
