An Isle of Wight beach has been named as one of the most unique in the world by Tripadvisor.com, placing it alongside destinations in Brazil, Chile and Hawaii.
Yaverland Beach at Sandown Bay has been ranked 15th out of just 19 beaches featured on the list compiled by the travel guidance website.
Only one other UK beach – Bamburgh in Northumberland – has made the list.
Tripadvisor said of Yaverland Beach:
“More “Jurassic Park” than “Baywatch,” this beach off the coast of southern England is known as a prime fossil-hunting spot for dinosaur teeth and ancient footprints. Before you hit the sand, stop by the Dinosaur Isle Museum to learn about the area’s prehistoric residents.”
VisitIsleOfWight.co.uk, the Isle of Wight’s most visited destination website, describes Yaverland Beach as one of the Island’s best beaches, offering a long stretch of sand and great swimming waters for children and families.
The website notes that Yaverland has small rocks dotted along the shore and, when the tide is out, the sandy beach expands across acres. The beach stretches northeast from the Yaverland Sailing and Yacht Club to the foot of the chalk cliffs of Culver Down.
Steve Wells, of the Bay Business Association and Vice-Chair of Visit Isle of Wight, has said:
“For Tripadvisor to put Yaverland Beach firmly on the map is fantastic. Seeing part of Sandown Bay sat alongside such destinations as The Bahamas, Mexico and New Zealand really is great news, recognising the Bay’s unique contribution to the Isle of Wight as a leading holiday destination.
“Tripadvisor has certainly shone a spotlight on the Bay and given people even more reason to visit!”

I agree Yaverland beach is unique.
50p to use the toilets
Lol
Yes, it is perfect, until Sewage discharges every time it rains, which has been every day, and my dog now has eye infections! Check it out on Safer Seas and Rivers website/app
And a group of humans swim there every week!
Im shocked at this ..I regularly walk our dogs here as do many others and the amount of sewage on that beach is disgusting. Shit that rolls around disgusting and looks like pebbles every where…I know I’ve gone to pick them up to throw for the dogs ..smelly frothy foam washing up off the sea everywhere..an absolute toxic beach most of the time in my opinion
You have summed up Yaverland well, thankfully the
Numpties who rated Yaverland beach are not food
inspectors.
