The Isle of Wight’s sole Wessex Premier representatives – Cowes Sports – travel to face playoff contenders Hamble Club in their final Wessex League fixture this afternoon (Saturday).
The Yachtsmen are still becalmed in midtable – one of 3 teams on 45 points, together with Christchurch and Bournemouth. If other results go their way, Cowes could finish the season as high as 10th.
The corresponding fixture at the Zilch Waste Stadium ended honours even in an exciting 4-4 draw.
On Monday, an understrength Cowes side travelled to Dorset to face Sherborne Town in a game that finally kicked off at 20:10, losing 1-0 to an 89th minute goal.
Co-manager Ian Potts says:
“More than half the squad we took to Sherborne were all under-18s, and a few were making there first team debuts. All the lads were superb, and we deserved a draw. It was a proud night for the club.
“Some of the more established first team players are all slowly getting back from injury and will be involved in the match against Hamble on Saturday.
“Hamble are still chasing a play off place, so it will be interesting game. I definitely want to win and carry the momentum into the Gold Cup final and another season at Wessex Premier League level.”
