Cowes Sports have climbed to 2nd place in the Wessex Premier League after winning 1-2 at previously unbeaten Stoneham on Tuesday night.
The Yachtsmen had some significant absences in the side that travelled to Stoneham. Missing were leading scorer John McKie, captain Fin Phillips and midfielder Jimmy Mumford. Into the side came Darren Williams. Jimmy Wykes and Connor Furmidge were promoted from the substitutes bench to the starting line-up.
The Island side began the game with attacking intent. Connor Furmidge had a close-range shot cleared off the goal line in the 7th minute. The Yachtsmen then took the lead when Darren Williams slotted the ball under Stoneham keeper, Tom Parker-Trott (0-1). Stoneham equalized in under a minute through Duarte Martens, who curled the ball past Ed Hatt (1-1). Cowes regained the lead when Conor White sent a long ball to Jimmy Wykes, who slotted it past Purples keeper, Parker-Trott (1-2).
Stoneham should have gone into the halftime interval on equal terms when they were awarded a 45th-minute penalty, which the Purples centre-forward, Cal Laycock, blasted onto the crossbar.

The Yachtsmen continued to press Stoneham after the half-time break. Early in the 2nd half, Aedan Coode made a great run, beating 3 defenders on the bye-line before passing to Jimmy Wykes, who saw his shot parried by the Purples’ keeper for a corner. In the 68th minute, Connor Furmidge beat a defender before blasting the ball at Parker-Trott, who again deflected for a corner.
The Purples then pressed the Yachtsmen for the final quarter of the game with Ed Hatt having to pull off some fine saves to preserve the Islanders’ lead. However, the Cowes defence held firm to ensure that all 3 points returned safely across the Solent.
