Cowes Sports will be hoping to end a miserable run of 3 successive defeats when they play 8th-placed Alton at Westwood Park tomorrow (Saturday).
Cowes, who started the season at the top of the table after an opening day win at Amesbury, have now fallen to 17th place in the Wessex Premier. The Yachtsmen should take heart from the fact that Alton lost 4-0 to East Cowes Vics at Beatrice Avenue in the Wessex League Cup on their last visit to the Island in September.
A full report of the fixture will appear in Island Echo Wessex League Roundup on Sunday.
In the other Wessex League fixture to take place on the Island this Saturday, on the east bank of the Medina, 15th-placed East Cowes Vics will take on 3rd-placed Folland Sports – the side that knocked them out of the Wessex League Cup last month.
Vics manager Richie Woodburn said of the fixture:
“I have to pick the lads up after the defeat at Petersfield. It will be competitive against Follands, but I’m not going into the game thinking we can’t win. It’s possible to pick up points against the unlikeliest of teams.”
2nd-placed Newport will hope to maintain the momentum in their promotion push when they travel to North Hampshire to face 11th-placed Whitchurch United. Co-manager Steve Brougham has said he feels the team can take on anyone. Coach travel is available for any supporters wishing to attend the game. The coach will leave St George’s Park at 11:00 and the cost of the return journey is £15.
The big game in Island League Division 1 on Saturday is at Steyne Park, where 3rd-placed Bembridge take on champions and current league leaders, Whitecroft & Barton Sports. An away win will give W&B their 32nd successive victory.
2nd-placed Shanklin, who are still unbeaten and level on points with W&B, face a tough game at Vicarage Lane against an improving Brading Town side.
In Island Division 2, leaders Pan Community, who have already netted 105 goals in the 18 games they have completed in the season so far, play 4th-placed Adgestone at Downend. 2nd-placed East Cowes Sports have a difficult fixture at Steyne Park against 5th-placed High Park.
There is 1 game in the Hampshire Vase at Smallbrook this Saturday, where Ryde Saints take on Hedge End Rangers.
News of Island League games will appear in the Island League Round up in Island Echo on Monday,
