The Yachtsmen made three changes to the starting line up that had lost away at Hamworthy on Saturday, with Darren Williams, Scott McFarlane and Ben Snow replacing injured captain, Gareth Bricknell, Ewan Cranwell and Joe White.
Disaster struck for the home side after just ten minutes, when some sloppy defending saw Morgan Perrin losing possession of the ball on the edge of his own box, gifting the ball to the Rams’ Harry Bedford, who converted from close range. In the 19th minute, the Yachtsmen responded to the wake up call by pulling a goal back, when James Wykes latched onto a Micheal McEnery cross to divert the ball past Matt Petts in the Petersfield goal.
However, the Rams delivered two killer blows just before the stroke of half time, to put the game almost beyond the Yachtsmen’s reach. First, Harry Bedford sent a curling free kick around the wall into the top left corner of tEd Hatt’s goal to restore their lead. Worse was to follow, when, two minutes later, Marvin Orepo added a third for the Rams, to leave the home side trailing 1-3 at half time.
Half time: Cowes Sports 1-3 Petersfield Town
The second half began in remarkable fashion, when James Wykes scored direct from a corner in the 48th minute, to leave the home side trailing by a single goal. The Yachtsmen then piled on the pressure, with Wykes almost completing his hat trick in the 72nd minute, but the striker found his effort blocked by the Rams’ keeper. Wykes then turned supplier, giving substitute Ji Nash the chance to level, but again Matt Petts in the Petersfield goal quick off his line to preserve the away side’s lead.
In the 77th minute, Jordan Neal hit a great strike from the edge of the Cowes area past the despairing dive of Ed Hatt to clinch the tie for the Rams, and leave the Yachtsmen regretting their failure to convert their second half chances.
