Firefighters have tackled a large wheelie bin fire in Sandown overnight, just hours after the end of this year’s nearby Funtasia family fun day.
Crews were called to Los Altos Park, Old Reservoir Lane off of The Broadway at 03:00 this morning (Monday) after receiving reports of a number of large wheelie bins ablaze.
The incident, which has destroyed 20 bins, is being treated as suspicious by Police, who also attended the scene.
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service tackled the flames before leaving the scene around 60 minutes later.
UPDATED: Organisers of the Funtasia event have this afternoon announced that up to 30 wheelie bins have been destroyed, while a number of large metal bins have also been burnt.
Local businesses have rallied around today to assist organisers in clearing up the debris, which has charred the ground and left melted plastic.
MEANWHILE, fire crews tackled a small blaze into the gentleman’s section of public toilets at Lake Cliff Gardens last night (Sunday).
Crews were called shortly after 19:20, staying on the scene for 20 minutes.
The Isle of Wight Council has played closed the toilets, located opposite The Heights. The fire broke out in the men’s section of the block at 7.21pm. Firefighters took just under 20 minutes to tackle the blaze.
