A gap has appeared in the centre of Newport after a row of commercial properties were demolished recently and it’s now been revealed what it’s hoped will replace them.
The flattening — which includes the former RSCPA shop, Cycling shop and what was once Creations Hair Studio — was approved by the Isle of Wight Council in February 2019 and housing and office space is proposed.
The brownfield site will host 5 2-storey/ 2-bed houses, as well as a 3-storey block of flats, that will include 1 studio and 5×1 bed apartments.
In 2019, the Isle of Wight Council described the shops as being in a poor state and most had been standing empty.
After final permissions were granted to developer RJ &DE Billings, the project is now underway.
The site has been earmarked for development since 2012. In 2013, there was a scheme for 10 flats, while in 2017, 20 were planned.
In 2018, 6 were proposed because more were considered “unlikely to be viable”.
Other last-minute approvals for certain aspects of the development, including the building materials, is imminent.

More housing, what a shocker
So the council approve this because the shops were in a poor state, empty and not viable but then refuse the old Lloyds Bank building in Sandown?? So corrupt and inconsistent in their brown envelope policies.
And the parking for these properties is ??????
Oh it must be under ground
Oh lovely. Will no doubt reach listed status in the next century.
Would have made a perfect doctors / dentist location. Then when that is built can we have more homes.
Not another GP surgery then, just more people to sign onto the existing single one.
