William Lakin, Harrison Lake and Sam Callaghan from Westridge Golf Club have been crowned English Junior Champion Club 2022 with a total of 150 Stableford points.
The Westridge team – made up of 15-year-old Sam, 16-year-old William and 18-year-old Harrison – is believed to be the only club from the whole of Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands ever to have won this prestigious national trophy.
Westridge Golf Club’s team made a late charge to win the 36-hole event, played over both courses.
After Day 1 on the Bracken, Westridge were tied for 6th and playing catch-up on the trio representing Ludlow Golf Club. With the 2 best Stableford scores from 3 counting for each team, Ludlow held a 6-point advantage over Westridge going into Day 2 on the Hotchkin.
However, the team from the Isle of Wight produced a fightback to record a team score of 78 points for a total of 150 points. That allowed them to win the crown by a point from Gaudet Luce Golf Club with Ludlow 2 shots off the pace.
Mark Wright from Westridge Golf Club has said:
“This is undoubtedly Westridge Golf Club’s greatest achievement. It was a team effort. It’s testament to the club, the parents and the players themselves. I hope this provides a boost for junior golf on the Isle of Wight.
“The club has been in existence for less than 30 years, and we’ve achieved an unbelievable milestone. I was staggered. 31 counties from across England sent representatives to the event. Simply to have managed a top 10 finish would have been an achievement.”
