Westridge held their own Isle of Wight Ryder Cup Event on the weekend of 6th and 7th July. 43 members representing Team Europe, Captained by Lady Vice Captain Lorraine Swallow and Team USA, Captained by Club Vice Captain Gordon Debenham, took part in a match play competition over 2 days, in sometimes very challenging conditions. Saturday was played in pairs with 9 holes in Greensomes, followed by 9 holes of Foursomes. Europe took an early lead, winning the Greensomes 4 – 3. The Foursomes saw a fightback by the USA. They won 5 – 1, to leave the overnight score Europe 5 – USA 8. With due consideration to the weather, it was decided to proceed with the 2nd day singles. Dodging the showers, Europe made a valiant effort, winning the day 10 – 9 1/2. But it wasn’t enough to prevent the USA retaining the trophy. Final Score: Europe 15 – USA 17 1/2.
